01 Avalon trans fluid check

Hi, my apologies if this is a duplicate thread...did a forum search and came up with mountain of erroneous responses. What is the procedure for checking the transaxle fluid on the 01 Avalon? It isn't mentioned in the owner's manual, and it's been 17 years since I owned an automatic. Back in the day, it was park on a level surface w/the engine running. On my Avalon with the engine off, the dipstick shows the trans grossly overfilled. Running, looks like it's underfilled.

Thanks

Whenever you get home from running errands or from work, leave the car in park on an even spot with the engine running while completely warmed up. Check the dipstick and see where the fluid level is. There should be a full cold line and a full hot line. Make sure the fluid is bright red and within a reasonable distance from the full hot line if not right on it. Don't overfill otherwise you will have to drain it to get it back out. If the fluid is brown, watery looking or has a burnt smell, the fluid and filter should be replaced. Good Luck

Yup, the Trans dip stick is "stupid long", and enters the trans pan at an angle, making real hard to get a good reading. Also, as you pull the stick some of the old fluid coats the tube, so after u clean the stick and stick it back in some of that fluid covers the dip stick end, giving you a false reading. I sometimes have to take 2 or 3 readings to get a good one.

Basically what "dewmasterdj" said is spot on: Drive the car to get the tranny warm. Park in a level spot, engine idling, read stick. Good luck.
