Sienna spare tire recall

Well folks, it's been almost A YEAR and I'm still driving around with my spare tire in the back seat.

Taking people to the airport with their luggage on their laps is truly embarrassing and inconvenient...I've done it 4 times now.

I keep seeing these commercials on TV about how wonderful Toyota is, and their attention to customers concerns, and realize how much horsepoop that is. Pure marketing propaganda.

If Toyota really cared they would have fixed this minor tire-cable problem in a couple of months. There are hundreds of factories that would love to get that job order.

I think Toyota has given up on the old faithful customers of 1999-2004 Sienna vans and are going after the naive younger buyers who believe Toyota's desperate attempt to fix the quality control problems with flashy marketing instead of action that fixes the problem.

give us more info on your problem.

I took my 08 model in for a oil change, they checked the spare tire cable, lubed it or whatever was the check/fix and said i was good to go.

mine has been great van (second one we have owned) first one ran 123K miles with only 1 $200 sensor replaced, not many vehicles can say that.

so we bought another one, son bought one, friends bought one.

for the money they have been great vehicles for our family

maybe you just have a poor service manager at your local dealership

go to another dealer, see it they can help you.

Before you lose all emotional control and sell your Sienna, you should phone your dealer. It's been at least a couple of months now that we received a letter from Toyota saying bring your van in we have a new cable for you, no charge.

I am not complaining that they are still looking after me with free repairs for a 9 year old vehicle. Have a look at your spare tire at the same time, mine was very rusty so ordered a new rim. Wanna bet that any vehicle with a spare sitting in that location has rust problems? I don't see any other manufacturer stepping up to look after rear mounted exterior spares.

When I took it in for an inspection they found that the cable and bracket were totally rusted and removed it, and put the spare in the back.

Yes, I agree it's been a great van...I'm just disappointed with the slow response. I understand the repair part may be in stock now, so I'll call the dealer again.

Thanks for your reply,

Vic

Here is a reply a got from Toyota:

Thank you for your recent correspondence.

With regard to your email, please be advised that the need for new spare tire carrier assemblies was greatly underestimated. Toyota Canada Inc. has increased our orders; however, there is a lead time issue with the manufacture of these parts. We kindly suggest staying in contact with your dealer so they can inform you once the necessary parts are available.

In the interim, we understand that vehicle cargo space is at a premium and necessary. As such, Toyota Canada Inc. (TCI) is offering a limited Roadside Assistance Program to affected owners of the 1998-2010 model year Sienna vehicles.

Those who had their Spare Tire Carrier Restraint Cable inspected and found to be corroded or fraying, as outlined in the technical instructions of the campaign, need to have the spare tire removed and stowed securely in the cargo area of the vehicle.

If you decide to remove the spare tire from the vehicle, we recommend that it be stored in a safe and secure location to prevent theft. While the vehicle is without a spare tire, limited roadside assistance will be provided to the vehicle owner at no charge.

Limited Roadside Assistance:

- This offer is not extended to customers who do not have their spare tire relocated

- Free roadside assistance is necessary due to a tire failure/flat tire

- Towing up to 300 km to the nearest authorized Toyota dealership

- If the nearest Toyota dealership is either closed for business or is greater than 300 km, towing to a nearby tire repair shop is acceptable

- This offer is extended throughout all of Canada and mainland U.S.A.

- This offer does not include the expense of the tire repair or replacement

Please be advised that this Additional Roadside Assistance coverage will be available until April 1, 2011. However, the parts required to service the campaign may be available prior to this date.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

Sincerely,

John Ross
