1989 Toyota Pickup Clutch Problem

New here. What a very informative site.

Just bought a 1989 Toyota Pickup. Only problem I can find with it is when stopping at a traffic light for more than 20 seconds or so with the clutch and brake. The truck tries to stutter forward as if the clutch was out. If I pump it a few times everything is back to normal. It shifts absolutely fine once you get going ie: 1st to 2nd to 3rd and so on. It only does that after I have been stopped. I was told the original owner had the clutch replaced not too long ago. Could it be a bad slave?

yeah it could be the piston on the slave getting stuck or losing pressure and retracting. it could also be the clutch master cyl. To avoid extra wear on the parts, dont depress the clutch until your ready to shift into gear. They arent made to be held down for all the time sitting at traffic lights

Also try to bleed the clutch hydraulic fluid. May have some air.

Thanks for the info. I did bleed them last night. There was some air. This truck had set for two years before I bought it.

It is still doing it. I think I will replace both valves??? Hopefully that clears it up.

I had the same issue. Unfortunately I had to remove the clutch to see what was going on. It turns out my truck had an aftermarket Stage 2 clutch and I guess they are very sensitive on first gear and will shake if you don't release quick enough. I went back to a stock style and the problem went away

I'd replace the slave first. If that doesn't solve the problem, go to the more expensive master cylinder.

Don't forget to replace the soft line while you're at it. after 20 years it's about time. check around, some parts stores can order or custom make hoses which will run around $25 usually.
